Our Kitchen

It felt like forever, but we finally are done with the kitchen!

Nos tomó mucho tiempo, pero por fin terminamos con la cocina!

We started this process at the beginning of the year, but everything really started when we decided to build a new home about 2 years ago. Literally we built this house around the kitchen. I knew I wanted an open kitchen concept since day one. Also, I wanted a big island and a barn inspired sink.

Aunque empezamos con el proceso a principios de año, todo realmente comenzó hace 2 cuando decidimos construir nuestra casa. Literalmente construimos la casa en torno a la cocina. Siempre supe que quería un concepto abierto, con una isla enorme al centro y una tarja blanca de cerámica.

Pinterest! was my bff all this time, I don't know what I would have done without it. I looked there any reference and definitely was very helpful to show them to our builder. In the beginning I wanted an all-white kitchen, like this Pickell Architecture pic, but since the main living room was a white open concept already, I felt it would be to much white.

Pinterest! fue mi mejor amigo todo este tiempo. No sé qué hubiera hecho sin él. Buscar cualquier referencia siempre fue más sencillo y por supuesto aún más a la hora enseñársela a nuestro arquitecto.

Al principio quería una cocina totalmente blanca, como esta de Pickell Architecture , pero el resto del espacio ya era muy similar y pensé que quizás sería demasiado blanco.

Then I thought of a two-tone cabinet concept, and loved the French bistro look like this Venegas and Company pic, but later decided that black or charcoal might be a little harsh, and decided to look after an off-white combo.

Después pensé en la posibilidad de combinar dos colores en los gabinetes, como los de un bistro francés, como esta de Venegas and Company, pero después sentí que quizás colores tan obscuros como negro o carbón podrían parecerme muy fuertes y preferí buscar una paleta más clara.

The cabinet color was the hardest decision ever. I changed my mind every 3 seconds and became frustrated. I mean, I had to take the right decision for once and live with the consequences for a long time. I looked for color combos everywhere, and then the right answer was in front of my eyes all this time...We have painted our master bedroom walls in Gray Owl and moldings in Simply White both by Ben Moore. We really loved this combo and blend with the rest of the living room's scheme very well. It felt right immediately and it turned out beautifully.

Decidir la paleta de colores definitivamente fue la decisión más difícil. Cambiaba de parecer muchas veces y fue algo frustrante. Sentía que tenía que tomar una decisión con la que me sintiera cómoda por mucho años y eso me asustó. Busqué por todos lados y al final la respuesta estuvo frente a mis ojos todos este tiempo! Habíamos pintado la recámara principal de Gray Owl y las molduras de Simply White, ambos colores de Benjamin Moore y nos encantaba! Realmente nos gustaba esa combinación de color y se mezclaba muy bien con el resto del espacio. Al final resultó precioso!

Here's the mood board I came up with. Finally, I went for a herringbone subway tile and a light gray grout I custom made by mixing grey, white and brown grout since I couldn’t find the right color.

Aquí está el mood board que hice. Finalmente ya no usamos el subway tile tradicional sino una variación más alargada y la colocamos en forma de espiga y eso hizo toda la diferencia!

For the general layout design, I was inspired absolutely by this picture from Heidi Piron Designs

Para el diseño general definitivamente está foto de Heidi Piron Designs fue la que más me inspiró.

So, we are very happy with the results, but there are 3 things missing: we need to buy a dishwasher, an unpolished brass pot filler that would be placed above the range (of course we ran out of budget), the wood range cover also painted in Simply White and crown moldings.

Estamos muy contentos con el resultado final. Aún quedan pendientes algunas cosas: tenemos que comprar una lavavajillas, poner una llave o pot filler en la pared central arriba de la estufa, cubrir la campana con una gabinete del mismo color que la parte superior y molduras en el techo.
